In the UK, apprenticeship funding is available to support the training and development of apprentices. The funding is provided by the government through the Apprenticeship Levy, which was introduced in 2017.
Employers with a pay bill of over £3 million per year are required to pay a levy of 0.5% of their total pay bill. This money is then deposited into a digital account, which can be used to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment.
For smaller employers who do not pay the levy, the government provides co-funding towards the cost of apprenticeship training which in most cases covers 95% of the cost. The amount of co-funding varies depending on the apprenticeship standard and the age of the apprentice, where there are further incentives including grants available to support employers who take on apprentices aged 16-18. These grants are designed to help cover the additional costs of supporting these groups of apprentices.
