Industry growth in 2017 was just under 1% and value gains continue into Januaryback to list
08 February 2018
The GfK Panelmarket figures for 2017 have just come through and show a 0.9% growth for 2017.
Growth throughout most of the year in the B2B sector tailed off at the end of the year with deflation surprisingly dragging the overall value down despite well publicised increases from manufacturers and wholesalers which must clearly be squeezing dealer margins. Growth in pads and writing instruments continues, but volumes of laser printers declines sharply and the impact of sales of MPS solutions to the market had a major impact on transactional cartridge sales.
In the retail sector end users felt the full weight of the inflationary supply increases with over a 10% hike in prices during the year but with correspondingly lower sales volumes. Back to school sales were later arriving this year and better September figures compensated for disappointing July and August ones. A trend towards smaller pack sizes as well as a move back to traditional products like ballpoint pens, correction products and highlighters helped to offset an overall decline in volumes.
Reports from the market (thanks Martin of PPS and others) report that dealer confidence is high and after a sluggish start to January, sales values are up over January 2017. Whether price increases have been able to be passed on as effectively as required, we will find out when we get next month's figures.
Thanks to all of you who filled in our CBI Brexit survey. The answers were as polarised as the original referendum but the consensus is that speed of completion of the negotiation process will serve everyone's best interests.
