Q&A with Kate Davies: New Committee Member of the Leaders of the Future Community
Kate Davies, Assistant Editor at OPI, has been making her mark in the industry for just over a year. As a newcomer and young professional, she brings a fresh perspective and a passion for empowering the next generation of leaders. Here, Kate shares her insights and aspirations as she joins the Leaders of the Future committee.
What’s one thing you hope to contribute to the Leaders of the Future community?
I aim to continue LOTF's mission of driving the industry forward by instilling confidence in the next generation. Joining OPI fresh out of university gives me a unique perspective as a newcomer, young professional, and journalist. I’m keen to use these outlooks to help LOTF diversify our industry further, bring people together, and ultimately future-proof our sector.
What inspired you to join the Leaders of the Future community?
During my short time in the industry, I've had countless opportunities to connect with experts who have generously shared their time and insights. I’ve been incredibly lucky, and I want to help LOTF extend these opportunities to new members, guiding people toward valuable mentorship.
What’s one leadership skill you’re focusing on developing right now?
I'm focusing on presenting my ideas and suggestions with clarity. Having ideas isn't always enough; how you communicate them can make all the difference. In the past, I’ve been guilty of following ideas I didn’t entirely agree with simply because I couldn’t defend my counterargument appropriately. However, being around more leaders has shown me there are different leadership styles, and while I may not be the loudest person in the room, I want to develop a style based on effective communication and resilience.
What’s your proudest accomplishment so far in your leadership journey?
Achieving a distinction in my master’s degree during my first six months at OPI marked a milestone in my education and career. Balancing studying with a new role was challenging, but the experience taught me more about my abilities and limits.
In your opinion, what’s the most important quality of a great leader?
Emotional intelligence is important, particularly in small teams where collaboration is crucial. Leaders with this quality create an environment of trust and empathy, encouraging open communication and highlighting the value of mental well-being.
How do you like to unwind and recharge after a long day?
I love going to the theatre – watching live performances in a packed room reminds me how fleeting moments can be and puts things into perspective.
