The day was established to raise awareness of mental health issues, promote mental health advocacy, and mobilise efforts to support mental wellbeing worldwide.

Each year, World Mental Health Day focuses on a specific theme, allowing for in-depth discussions and initiatives related to that theme. Past themes have addressed topics such as mental health in the workplace, young people’s mental health, and suicide prevention.
